Question about Java update

since there malware going around, thought check java version make sure date. turns out when searched java version in terminal, says have install java runtime. question is:

java enabled?
need java runtime?

if installed os x lion or bought new (if got new mac) , never installed java, you're in clear in terms of catching new trojan.

if upgraded os x lion snow leopard, may have java. believe came preinstalled in snow leopard.

in case, don't have java. it's not installed/enabled. need if run java apps. make sure java not enabled in safari if want use standalone apps.

safari>preferences>security>unclick "enable java"
