Does Find my iPad (or iPhone) work after wipe?

hi. have wifi ipad 2. used 4 digit passcode i've been wondering if mistake. i've enabled find ipad feature if takes ipad, won't know access code won't able start , on wireless network - therefore won't able find it. if removed access code, start , connect network, allow me track it.

i'm concerned data privacy want able track device. should continue use passcode? if do, , steals device , forced wipe it, tracking functionality useless?

 

find ipad works if device locked.
