2009 iMac Upgrades Question

hi there,

have late 2009 3.06ghz imac since i've upgraded lion has become rather sluggish.

possible install 8gb of ram imac, or 4gb limit ? ( on 2gb)

also, wanted replace hard drive 500gb 1/2tb hdd. can pickup regular 3.5inch sata hdd ? or brand/model specific ?
