Time Machine taking forever to back up new HD

hi all,

n00b when comes mac hardware installs, replaced wife's hard drive in unibody (2008/09) macbook pro. of hardware has gone swimingly, restore time machine taking excruciatingly long. though have hooked via ethernet, seems determined wirelessly. eta: 56 hours! doing wrong?

have tried disabling wifi, makes time machine disappear together. have swapped out ethernet cable sure. have tried restore through time machine , through migration assistant same results. using snow leopard (which worse, seemed), upgraded system lion on old drive, backed , upgraded lion on new drive restore same 50-100 hour backup estimate.

thoughts?

pretty sure first backup takes long due indexing.
