i have 2011 mac mini server lion server. i've played little bit "server" application fun i'm user of machine, , person in household, haven't had real pressing need features of lion server. own ipod touch don't see need/point of remote managing since it's 1 device use. have mbp laptop runs snow leopard right upgrade lion summer. thinking maybe cool network-based user system can have same experience on desktop , laptop, wonder how effective if used laptop travel purposes?
guess i'm still not totally familiar lion server can me. functionality there in lion server might able take advantage of?
1 thing know interested in vpn server. right i'm student , school provides vpn server can use wherever am, giving me secure connection whenever on travel. i'm supposed graduate relatively soon, however, , presumably lose access great vpn service. perhaps can create own using lion server though?
don't have website or domain. maybe in future i'd set 1 up, again since losing university provided web services. if want set own vpn i'd need myself domain name? , can start setting services vpn server? other uses lion server guys find useful, particularly if you're in single user environment?
or trying make square peg fit in round hole, , whatever i'm doing best approach situation?
mac os x server worth buy. can set accounts on network , log them using both laptop , desktop. have ability make account "mobile" meaning files synced between laptop , server whenever on network (so whatever files created/modified when not on network show on desktop).
vpn super easy set , use. can lion server.
when running server, you'll use called dns. it's simple actually, stands domain name system. links domain name ip address. when type "apple.com" web browser, you're brought 17.172.224.47. point of can still server via ip address, there isn't need domain name if want save money.
however, quick note on ip addresses: you'll need static ip address isp. if ip address changes, won't able access of server's services until figure out new ip address is. isps charge this.
lion server can provide web services you, too. uses apache. server app provides easy use, yet limited modification of web service (one of huge complaints snow leopard server lion server). can edit configuration files manually. additionally, web service allows access email , calendar online , set wiki , blog.
while server personal use too, use email, calendar, contacts, website, vpn, firewall, backup, , file transfer. it's easy set , use. don't need learn anything.
