the moon beginning rise dusk set in on mrville. outside of town ezekiel , sister hannah in trouble. crouched behind rocks off main road heads town. ezekiel knew if through city gates safe. hannah's heart beating fast pounding on chest. "shhh", ezekiel whispered, "you're breathing loud; they'll hear us." hannah looked @ older brother trying hide panic feeling. "zeke, can't catch us, both know happen if do".
ezekiel knew words true , turned focus toward must done. picked rock him on ground. motioning hands communicated plan hannah. throw rock on left in hopes cause distraction. break road , run town fast could. eyes locked brief second gathered resolve , prepared take chances.
rock sailed through air in slow motion watched arc , disappear between trees. whack of it's landing cue , sprang motion. on road in instant , side side headed gates in distance. hannah ran confidence, , ezekiel had won relay race @ last years fall festival. glanced left ezekiel side putting 1 foot in front of other strength had. knew going make it.
of sudden hannah felt rush side. heard crash paired loud grunt , ezekiel gone. afraid fixed gaze on town gates getting closer… by… the… step.
blow hit in , before hannah in air. hit ground thud , rolled on twice banging head. happened fast. hannah disoriented, hear screaming. lowered hands face , saw covered in blood. went black.
