recent switcher, video format help for CS3 or iMovie

i got imac week ago, , i've been hoping try out adobe premiere pro cs3 on it. used winxp user lived on win movie maker making little music fan vids of fave tv series.

recall having convert of vids wmv format inorder create vids. same premiere cs3 or cs5? or imovie?

tried importing videos , comes out "error. codec not available"

if have convert videos, format? imovie? premiere?

sorry if have many questions, i'm new this. switched...

advice can give!
