Help Transfer MP4 Files from MBA to an External HD

i did search topic , 3 unrelated threads came up.

want restore new mba, want first transfer (backup) mp4 files movie folder western digital external hard drive (wdhd). opened new finder window , thought hi-light file itself, hold down cmnd , drag file wdhd window, keeps giving me "no" symbol (circle diagonal line). know simple, can't figure out. tried copy, paste grayed out. tried cut, won't allow me paste.

what's deal? any of can provide me. thanks.

new mac (3months now), , may still have windows mindset.

how external drive formatted? right-click on drive in finder , info find out.
