first post here! music recording in logic pro 9 , use additional software grand pianos, plug ins, etc. instance studio based around imac 27" 3.4ghz, 256 ssd , 2tb hard drive , 16gb ram. 2 tb drive software samples , logic audio files. ssd os , boot of apps...
questions should newest 2.4ghz 15" macbook big ssd , 1 of "surgeries" 2nd drive , put in optical bay? thinking maybe biggest solid state drive (500gb) main drive, 1tb drive 2nd drive, 16 gb ram (x2 8gb chips)...
sort of voids warranty bit i'd do. makes portable too, don't have bring external portable drive "location" recording.
guess biggest concern dreaded "fan noise" problem. lot of recording right in close proximity computer , fan noise bad. there configuration have moderate noise instead of fans going crazy. said macbook airs don't have same issues macbook pros there's less connectivity...
should late '11 macbooks? deals on '11 macbooks now. go 17" bigger processor maybe less fan issue? smaller 13"? thanks...
on 13", problem fan noise gpu when have external monitor + internal (temp goes 80-90, fan screams). no problem if keep either 1 of them. happens in ableton live (it's drawing special interface suppose), haven't had fan noise protools 9, 1 or 2 monitors, on medium session.
of course if open heavy session using 70% or more of proc, noise spin faster, there's no way around on laptop. need use lot of plugs ins there. don't use logic don't kno how acts. standalone recording, shouldn't have noise issue.
in term of power 13" plenty anyway. , putting samples library heavy sampler streams disk on ssd works far better on hd, grand piano it's ultra responsive.
topic fan , snd monitor issue here:
here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1330789
air lacks ram upgrade possibility, firewire (for sound interface), , ability ssd+hdd configuration. , of course less powerful.
maybe light on field recording can interesting option
(but laptop never ideal in situation)
hdd makes small noise (default apple in optibay, depends), if unmount , leave ssd , fan @ default speed, it's silent.
