Background Render files in FCPX

i noticed projects folder in final cut pro x twice size of events folder. i'm assuming because of final cut pro x's render files.

i'm piecemeal replacing standard definition footage in several old video projects high definition footage, wind replaced, hd videos. i'm using 1080p footage coming in camera project specs, hoping @ least won't have make render files hd footage. however, it's doing background renders of sd video.

@ rate, i'm not sure i'm going have enough drive space of videos loaded projects.

there better way should/could managing reduce number of background renders? better still if there's way can change without jeopardizing work i've done far , starting over.
