Airport Express as wireless access point (not routing) via cable

hi,

have dlink dir-600 wireless router in house, , have ethernet cable down basement (which not receive wireless signal well).

then, tried connecting airport express ethernet port in basement , set access point (no routing!) basement. not work, error messages aiport utility , airport express flashes amber.

tried "extend" or "join" wireless network, tries extend/join wirelessly, right?

trying "set new network" works, new logical network (new ssid). , have change network on mbp if move around.

question is: can airport express extend network connects on ethernet cable?

help!

i have sort of approach in house, use 100% apple wireless stuff it.
have 3x airport express , 1x airport extreme. extreme routing, others extend wireless network. 4 connected wired lan.

did set network on extreme , set same network on expresses. make sure use same ssid, password etc , allow wireless channel automatic (or set them manually different each one).

internet setting on each express dhcp ip actual router. set network in each express off (bridge mode).

then, move around, mba (in case) switches 1 other moves in , out of range. there issues waking sleep 2.4ghz n setting, of mine on 5ghz n.

see if works adding express dlink's network.
