Developer Sees Quick Adoption of iOS 5.1 Amongst Users

ios developer david smith has been posting ios version stats universal app audiobooks [direct link]. smith gets 100,000 weekly downloads both paid , free versions , believes statistically meaningful data set.

launch of ios 5.1 on march 7th, 2012, smith has been tracking adoption rate suspected faster in past due availability of on air (ota) ios updates. indeed, after 5 days after initial release, smith found 50% of ota-eligible customers @ ios 5.1. now, after 15 days, he's found 77% of ota-eligible ios customers have upgraded latest version.

when backs out include versions of ios, including versions such ios 3 , ios 4 don't offer ota updates, finds total adoption @ 61% in 15 days.

seems represent significant boost in adoption ota-eligible upgraders.

while don't have directly comparable numbers, took ios 4.0 one month hit 50% usage web traffic. unfortunately, numbers aren't entirely interchangeable, there different data sets (app usage vs web usage), gives idea of scale. if anything, factors should have contributed faster uptake ios 4 have been expected major new feature release (vs 5.1) @ time , included in successful iphone 4 launch.

smith points out, same level of adoption android currently sees gingerbread (v2.3) launched earlier (mid/late 2011). meanwhile, latest version of android (ice cream sandwidth/v4.0) @ ~1.6% adoption after 5 months.

apple introduced "over-the-air" ios updates of ios 5.0 -- allowing users upgrade without connecting device computer. they've since deployed 2 different upgrades (5.01 , 5.1) users.

so many people know still on ios 4.1 or billion app updates waiting installed. baffles mind why doesnt bother them ^^
