so, had third party smart cover ebay no longer worked, , isn't actual smart cover, apple doesn't replace it. so, decided fix myself. took x-acto knife, , cut open slot on microfiber side thought magnet was. when opened little slot in side, see magnet, embedded in panel of plastic running down entire length of cover, opened cover side, using x-acto knife, 2 inches along edge magnet is. inside cover, there metal panel , plastic panel. if separate 2, can magnet out plastic panel. flip magnet around, , work third generation ipad. glue together, , you're set!
*i'm not sure if same method works on actual smart covers, have third party smart cover.
