Can I switch to a Mac from PC?

my current pc laptop getting ready replacement , i’m considering switching macbook laptop. before making plunge, have few questions:

1. have lot of school work, music, etc. on external hard drive formatted windows. can plug mac via usb , still access/edit data?

2. of software use (mathcad, etc.) available pc. there way reliably run software on mac? there special software have purchased this? still able use basic software functions such printing etc?

3. have time before making purchase. macbook line updated faster hardware/software worth waiting for?

thank suggestions might have.

yes can easily. data, in microsoft office format or pdf right? iwork os x compatible ms office, there free version called openoffice or neooffice. plus can buy ms office mac too. pdf's opened default os x software called preview, no need adobe.

if have program windows only, , no os x equivalent available, can run windows natively on mac using bootcamp or can run windows in virtual machine parallels or vmware fusion.

the macbook's discontinued, leaving choice of macbook pro or macbook air. can still regular macbook used or possibly through school before run out of stock on educational macbook's.
