hi,
i've got '09 17" macbook pro running latest version of lion. 3 months ago, machine started switching off unexpectedly when <50% charged; 'service battery' error appeared, , sure enough on trip apple store laptop failed battery test. battery had completed 98 cycles; wasn't first owner last year have cycled battery (100% down 'reserve power') since got hour or two's use @ time per day charged once-twice per week , used 50 complete charging cycles in year; explained told 'must have been used wrongly or been kept on charger time'. quote ridiculous £150 new battery , told laptop out of warranty anyway. given cost of 17" mbp not far off of used car, rather shocked @ quality of service provided...
less impressed apple's alledgedly brilliant customer service, decided diy (after all, there no warranty 'void'). on examining battery, old battery had failed: there expansion of 1 of compartments , cracks plastic casing of battery (i have kept battery). fortunately there appeared no external damage laptop casing or other components. due apple's failure provide user-serviceable part (which ridiculous since part can hold screwdriver , insert plug capable of performing) had purchase non-original replacement.
battery life perfect. have noticed odd behaviour don't know whether present before or not. if use laptop 'normally' - charges , discharges correctly. if wake laptop external display plugged in (i have mini-dp 15-pin adaptor), laptop has tendency 'forget' battery charged. reports (via menu bar , coconut, show consistent values) battery has tiny fraction of charge. however, if charge expected amount of time replenish battery recovers (ie. if @ 95%, , plug in external display , wake laptop claims battery @ 0%. however, charge time taken replete last 5% , acknowledges full battery again). there no service battery error , battery usage linear. smc reset doesn't help. smc firmware 1.43.
thoughts? doesn't sound hardware issue me - battery seems behaving fine. odd error battery failing report correct voltages (is logic based on battery, or establishing correct amount of charge done logic board?) or smc firmware / lion bug? has else seen kind of behaviour on other laptops? it's workaroundable problem, 1 solve if possible.
i'm not prepared pay apple either replacement battery (since last 1 not fit purpose, , doing may not solve problem anyway), , wouldn't pay replace logic board if logic board issue (since cost same laptop in , issue non-fatal). have sensible suggestions?
tldr... skimmed post, may have missed something. first, don't need drain battery before recharging. can plug in @ time. second, when using external display, should run mbp on ac power, rather battery. third, while may have luck, wouldn't trust or recommend non-apple battery or charger, due number of problems reported "knockoff" batteries. also, there no assurance knockoff batteries have same charging technology apple uses, involving battery, magsafe adapter , mac's logic board.
should answer most, if not all, of battery questions:
