ATV vs ATV2

have appletv 1st gen (with 160gb hdd), have used atvflash on, , use nitotv watch avis on attached 2tb usb drive.

understand, new generation/s of appletv (sans hdd etc) streams content - apple (?)...

via hacking, can used stream content hdd attached mac on network? (so make use of newer machine's hd abilities etc)
