video files and ipad

i've been having trouble transferring video files windows pc ipad. know itunes not accept avi files or windows media files. apple advised mp4 acceptable format itunes , ipad , happened have couple of files on pc, play through quicktime. practice, tried adding them itunes. no luck. able able these files ipad using dropbox. here kicker. play fine on ipad, cannot save them "videos" says there no app support file. right sitting in dropbox folder not because space limited.
so...my question: video file format itunes or ipad like?? if need convert these files, work?

i don't know how many times , others have posted this, go app store , download avplayerhd. can play video format want on ipad it, , simple load onto ipad well, through itunes. click , drag pc. no need convert files.

research on it.
