Remove large number of 'unread' emails from Mail App

i've been using gmail using browser on map. while switching snow leopard lion few months back, decided give mail app apple go.

added accounts without problem, gmail seems have 700k 'unread' emails.

note: use labels , such , have few other gmail accounts forward emails main account. there tons of emails missed (such send twitter label , don't land in inbox important mail) on long period of time.

there easy way rid of number in sidebar? when right click , check 'mark read' crashes or busy marking them read, can take hours or days.

try marking them read in gmail account through web interface.
