Need Help!! iMovie '11 not importing files...

i ripped 50 home movied dvds via handbrake. each ripped file 2gb, in h.264 codec , .m4v format. every single 1 of files in exact same format , open in quicktime. using macbook pro lion os , imovie '11. software date. here issues:

- files import imovie fine. go through import process , magically never show in events folder. it's files disappear!
- tried putting files in imovie drop box , same thing happened.
- tried converting them via "smart converter" , didn't work.

has had issue before? trying put compilation of last 10 years of home movies of our children wife before goes hospital major surgery.

on note, think have better luck final cut pro x? there free 30 day trial...

thanks,

pat

.m4v/.mp4 files not editing friendly format, due using h.264 codec (not editing codec, distribution codec), better off transcoding .m4v files use of mpeg streamclip .mov files using apple intermediate codec.
see below guides on how so:

, fcp x transcode files .mov files using prores codec, might more convenient you.

anyway, editing friendly formats take more space, 15 gb per hour of video. therefore should have enough room on external hdd.
