How do you turn off subs in VLC 2.0?

is there way have subtitles default off video files on vlc 2.0?

i've searched , found info on previous vlc versions.
i've played subtitle options in vlc's preferences no luck.
i'm running leopard 10.5.8.

are sure video you're trying watch doesn't have subtitles embedded (recorded onto images)? if that's case, can't turn them off player.
