Hard Drive Swap Question...

hi all,
i've been trying replace hard drive cloning first won't work. have apps on ssd in optical bay startup disk. (lion , apps deleted original macintosh hd). mid 2010 macbook pro 6,2

this....
1) install lion on new hd externally
- confirm can boot here.
- make startup disk
2) move files on internal external
3) install external drive macbook pro.
4) make ssd startup disk again.

sounds making more difficult needed, if ssd can booted won't need install lion on hard drive sounds storing data
