How to backup and restore (OSX 10.5)?

my powerbook has been running quite slow while , despite running disk utility , applejack haven't found out what's causing i'd try wipe drive clean , reinstall osx scratch see if helps.

time machine backups , know how clone drive using superduper or carbon copy cloner, i've never done full restore , assume cloning drive, copying put same files (overwriting newly installed macosx old files). i've never used time machine restoring whole drive, , worried not files copied (meaning files each app installs in addition own images, text documents, preferences etc.) -i believe read in forum somewhere.

do if want reinstall macosx system dvd, not wanting reinstall every piece of app , taking care copy associated files they're supposed be? i'm on macosx 10.5.8 on powerbook g4.

if clone drive can boot drive when attached os x. launch system preferences->startup disk , choose drive. aslo can hold down 'option' key while booting choose disk boot from.
