Hard drive search

this driving me nuts. have 2 identical imacs (8,1). on 1 of them, search features have gone south. when type in looking for, returns can describe 'loose' result - files listed contain string entered, appears not files on drive listed. can see particular file (or files) on hard drive , search didn't see it.

i've repaired permissions , indexed drive no avail. else can without having clean install?

first, you'll have better success searching in finder in using menu bar spotlight search. also, try re-indexing drive: spotlight: how re-index folders or volumes

if fails index, enter following command in terminal:

sudo mdutil -i on "/volumes/your drive name"​
