can you chain a regular monitor off of the imac thunderbolt

i know cant have regular monitor if second or third in thunderbolt chain if run regular display right imacs thunderbolt port. work?

directly connected mac work. mini displayport adapters on apple store website. @ least of them "...to mac mini displayport or thunderbolt port."
