Back up / Storage Question - Flash Drive

first, let me apologize if ask questions not seem pertinent, bit new-bie @ computer stuff , aarp-phart boot......i have older mac, new me given me daughter few years back. mac os x, version 10.4.11 (tiger, believe).

yesterday, bought dane-elec 8gb flash drive system backup and/or photo storage. told salesman plug usb port , pop-up windows "talk" me through it....... plugged in , got recognized can't figure out go there (no pop-up windows magically appeared).......... tried "help" feature, still having trouble duplicating photos have on iphoto........... can 1 me, please!!!

ask daughter, not live locally , sure doesn't want spend time (or have time) on phone trying talk me through. besides, bit embarrassed ask !!!!!!

that salesman must have been full of excrement then.
if have tiger*, there no automatic backup system included, there 1 called time machine**, comes 10.5.
however, can drag , drop important folders usb flash memory thumb drive if want
