Snow Leopard wont finish installing on clean hard drive

i have imac intel 1.83 ghz 17" core duo x86 architecture. bought friend , came no disks. had leopard on 3 years ago, bought white mac os x snow leopard install dvd- cost around $30- , upgraded snow leopard. no problems whatsoever until other day when did dumb thing. computer had been hanging up, freezing alot thought maybe reinstall , start fresh. have external hard drive plugged imac via usb , saved important things onto it(or thought). done, unplugged external drive. booted snow leopard install dvd, went disk utility, selected macintosh hard drive, , erased it. closed disk utility , clicked reinstall software. gets halfway through, stops error message mac os x cannot installed on computer. ive tried several times same result. goes further halfway ending error message. do now?

 

that strange. message comes before actual installation begins.
there more information message? appear in mac os x window/dialog or other way?

, didn't chance clone internal hdd external hdd?
