Moving from US to London (iPhone advice needed)

my wife , moving london summer , there next 4 years, possible there 1 year. both have had iphones since 2007 , heavily invested in ios.

know options carriers , costs in london.

travel abroad lot , need unlocked phone. uk carriers unlock phones on contract.

considering paying full price 2 unlocked iphones in , using cheapest option gives each @ least 1 gb of data. in long run cheaper option buying phone in uk on contract , paying required plan?

not need lot of calling minutes not know many people in london. skype or facetime call us.

carrier provides reliable/fastest data service in london?

finally, can micro sim card upon arrival?

via support page, appears of u.k.'s carriers support unlocking, although i'm sure "additional terms apply". also, appears o2 carrier supports visual voicemail.

of these carriers have microsims available @ stores, of should either free or relatively low in cost when sign contract them.
