hi, i'm 10.4.11 user.
using ancient system, i've been under bit of rock lately , learnt whole flashback.g 'certificate' thing going around.
did encounter little while ago (my java turned off, guess explains why didn't take advantage of that) couldn't recall whether i'd moronically hit 'continue' or not, did checks, suggested here http://www.macworld.com/article/165...ous_strain_of_mac_flashback_trojan_horse.html:
ls /users/shared/.*.so
,
defaults read ~/.macosx/environment
came 'no such file or directory', , 'does not exist'.
seems fine, gather bad guys may have changed locations of these files since article published - , learnt snow leopard + has in built anti-virus/is updated , protected apple. true?? (i'll try , find links if anyone's sceptical...)
on final note, learnt here http://antivirus-software.findthebest.com/compare/134-141/2012-kaspersky-anti-virus-vs-2012-clamxav clamxav (which used scan system, after updating definitions) responds viruses, not other malware threats (like trojans, presumably). perhaps, little pointless - unless you're concerned windows viruses - since there no mac viruses, say.
in all, old os, useless (in face of these kind of threats?) clamxav, , appears, no protection apple, i'm wondering if using tiger asking trouble now. java switched off.
reckon? , else using tiger here, or 1 left...?
me on issue!![]()
that's true snow leopard, lion , later versions.
that's false. clamxav detects both mac , windows malware , doesn't run elevated privileges. can run scans when choose, rather leaving running time, slowing system. clamxav has sentry feature which, if enabled, use significant system resources scan. disable sentry feature. don't need it. also, when first install clamxav, many antivirus apps, may perform initial full system scan, consume resources. once initial scan complete, periodic on-demand scans have lower demands on resources.
you don't need 3rd party antivirus app keep mac malware-free. macs not immune malware, no true viruses exist in wild can run on mac os x, , there never have been since released on 10 years ago. cannot infect mac visiting website, unzipping file, opening email attachment or joining network. malware in wild can affect mac os x handful of trojans, cannot infect mac unless actively install them, , can avoided basic education, common sense , care in software install. also, mac os x snow leopard , lion have anti-malware protection built in, further reducing need 3rd party antivirus apps.
that's need keep mac free of virus, trojan, spyware, keylogger, or other malware. don't need 3rd party software keep mac secure.
- make sure built-in mac firewall enabled in system preferences > security > firewall
- uncheck "open "safe" files after downloading" in safari > preferences > general
- uncheck "enable java" in safari > preferences > security. leave unchecked until visit trusted site requires java, re-enable visit site. (this not confused javascript, should leave enabled.)
- check dns settings reading this.
- be careful install software trusted, reputable sites. never install pirated software. if you're not sure app, ask in forum before installing.
- never let else have physical access install on mac.
- always keep mac , application software updated. use software update mac software. other software, it's safer updates developer's site or menu item "check updates", rather installing notification window pops while you're surfing web.
