help, unable to delete bookmarks

hello macrumors forums,
can me out please?

deleting bookmarks @ url, me involves getting page up, clicking on blue star @ right of url, deleting bookmark drop down menu.
trouble is, find stubborn page, blue star [incidative of bookmark] vanishes upon clicking on remembered bookmarks.

1. can tell me please, how proceed when blue star vanishes?
click on, remove bookmark i'm stuck when absent [frequently].

2. also, i'm coming against pages error 404 / longer exist, still bookmarked, cannot delete them.

tips here please?

caps + command + delete held delete bookmark , getting spinning beach ball of death when select bookmarks @ top of screen.
tells me bookmarks must full mac cope [i researched spinning beach ball of death find out why happens]

tried:

looked 404 errors given results web hosting. unsure go there not hosting websites, trying declutter mac book pro [15 inch]

details:

running firefox 11.0
mac os x 10.5.8
processor 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo
memory 2 gb 1067 mhz ddr3

intuitive mac user problems have experienced mac issues above head. [you tube has been helpful]

regularly try understand more mac when become confused behaviour , research fill gaps in knowledge.
