footage captured in mpeg2, convert to mp4 to import to imovie, back to mpeg2 for dvd

i purchased vhs capture software archive old home movies. software (roxio easy vhs dvd) captures video in mpeg2 burning dvd. has option import imovie, in essence converts file mp4. correct in assuming in order burn dvd (in program) new file have converted mpeg2 create vobs? plan on converting videos myself mp4 via handbrake before importing imovie. better off not importing imovie @ , burning mpeg2s directly dvd?
advice on how go process?

 

i don't have 1 mac used roxio (vhs dvd) 2009 windows. converted tapes avi files easy deal with, using video editing software.
