Connecting hard drive via USB or in a PC

hey everyone. need faulty hard drive. friend's hard drive stopped working , sent apple returned machine new hard drive (in machine) , old hard drive (separate machine). there's data on old hard drive wants retrieve. don't know if old drive functional in way, i'd test , see if recoverable (it might not boot it, data might retrievable). best way this? should enclosure , try connecting via usb? or possible load desktop pc (running windows)? he's not sure size (physically) hdd need find out specific machine or mbps have same hdd? on there important coursework documents he'd able get.

the size doesn't matter connectors same , can nothing 2.5" anyway.

depends on kind of stuff have lying around, easiest.

if have external drive (regardless size) open it, put hdd in , connect it. borrow such thing if don't have one. buy if want have external drive anyway.

if have access desktop pc can open.
in case have spare sata power connectors coming form power supply , spare sata cable connect those, or if not there optical drive in pc connected via sata (unless old one).
unplug optical drive , plug same cables hdd.
next retrieve data want , copy wherever want. without external drive need either big enough flash stick or transfer via lan.

pluggin desktop fastest , simplest option. remove side panel can plug in , out sata cables while pc running. crash if pull system drive , sata plug&play recognise it.
need macdrive or windows understand hfs+ mac filesystem.
