Need advice setting up data collection and calculation server with iOS integration

have idea iphone app (which not reveal reckon it's idea!), send couple bytes of data server every 10 seconds or when app activated (of course user permission etc), server set receives , stores data, computes related value , sends back. large-scale calculations working through data take place each day. set calculation-intensive.

basic plan have external raid set calculation computers attached it, , 1 controller computer. won't need several computers @ first, want make space expandability.

going work mac platform? or easier going linux? i'd rather mac products, suppose need consider options.

if go mac, what's starting point? xsan , xgrid?

have no formal training, quite proficient computers , consider myself technically minded. realise it's going bag of hurt , require me learn heaps, willing. if set end of year, i'll happy!
