What is a grandfathered carrier plan?

what grandfathered carrier plan? (referring cellphone plans)

grandfathering refers carrying discontinued plans current contract because still have them active on account. refers carrying old unlimited data plans forward. catch once switch off of them can't switch (without lots of work).
