MacBook Pro Slow Down. Suggestions?

i have macbook pro approximately 2 years old. i'm running snow leopard , have been experiencing lots of slow downs , beach balls recently. checked hd , fine, have 4gb ram. slow downs occur surfing web , using itunes. if upgrade lion slow downs? if upgrade time machine suffice before upgrading.

 

well wouldn't cheap, if got techtool 6, run volume rebuild tool , gain access lots of other diagnostics.
