HDMI-equipped Mini can pass lossless BR/HDDVD soundtracks

... in os x.

posted thread few days ago on 'apple tv and home theater' board, got no responses. in retrospect, think may have posted on wrong board **think** should welcome find folks other me.

minimize amt of work, i'm going paste post here:

require:

1) if lossless soundtracks uncompressed multichannel pcm (unlikely, though had 40 case):

a) hdmi-equipped mac mini (not free)
b) plex (free)
c) br drive (or br/hddvd drive if you're archiving both) -- around $100
d) makemkv (free 30 days)


if use above approach, have similar outcome mine below, in 3:10 yuma, movie w/ 7.1 lpcm soundtrack, played (note source bitrate , output bitrate on top line):




2) if plan on playing dts-ma or truehd tracks (most of you) well:

a) hdmi-equipped mini (see above)
b) plex (free)
c) br/hddvd drive (see above)
d) virtual machine (via parallels, vmware, or bootcamp) or windows pc
e) anydvd hd -- $131 if ordered. free if unscrupulous...
f) clown_bd -- free

once clown_bd has access either physical disk or virtual disk, have capability convert proprietary format (dts-ma or truehd) lpcm , create either iso or m2ts file. if create m2ts file, able played (as long select correct audio track) in plex. if make iso file, can use makemkv create mkv file lossless track via lpcm or without original uncompressed track. beauty of 2nd solution allow create mkv file both encoded format (dts-ma or truehd) , decoded lpcm format, such played both on mac mini (in lpcm format) along w/ whatever other peripherals (boxee box, windows pc) use (in encoded format).

in example below,, see plex 'sunshine' (whose native soundtrack dts-ma) in lpcm format:



and, if you're wondering if mega-audio-packed qazillion khz, 7 million bit file work, here dave matthews & tim reynolds live @ radio city, playing 96khz/ 24bit truehd soundtrack in decoded lpcm format on plex in os x:

 

note -- need select lpcm track in plex via menu unless archive lossless track, plex not default lpcm track.
