there naturally lot of hardware discussions in forum. backup software can handle more complex systems:
hardware (has taken 5 years pieces together):
macpro 2008 2x4 16gb
1) internal 2 ssd system + backup
2) external usb 2.5" time machine bu
3) external nas 8x3tb raid5 (qnap 859), on cisco switch 2x1 gbit
promise esata 4p
4) 15x2tb jbod (external home built cabinett "scrap disks")
5+6) 2x 5x3tb jbod (alternating, 1 off site)
areca 1882ix16 (just installed, contain)
8) 8x3tb external cabinet raid 5 (this primary dataset)
9) 4x160gb intel ssd raid 0
have 13tb data, growing, have gradually exchange 3tb 4 tb disks in 5) + 6) able keep full backups.
have 6 different data volumes (yes bit paranoid when comes loose data):
8) main data set
3+4+5+6 contain full backups.
9) contain fast version of work archive of photos.
have suggestion of software solution keep different volumes in sync?
far have used chronosync big volumes have found difficult make nice automatic solution when volumes not online (like 5 , 6).
have used carbon copy system disk.
alternativs?
scripts
retrospect (but seem have tarnished reputation last couples of years)
looks may need:

awesome , awesomely expensive.
avoid retrospect plague. worst. i'd rather rely on time machine. , that's saying something.
schedule superduper! smart updates on disks. mountable volume. bootable or otherwise.
