Trying to boot into iMac to retrieve personal files

i cannot boot imac. hangs when boot.

trying upgrade 10.4 10.6, failed during upgrade. @ point no longer access macintosh hd. can boot "target" mode, macbook not recognizing imac hd when plug in firewire cable.

goal pull of personal files, wipe hd, , install 10.6.

recommendations?

 

have tried booting in safe mode (hold either shift key right after startup tone)?
