Is it necessary for both memory slots to be equal in size?

hi all,

i'd upgrade ram on mid-2009 macbook pro. both memory modules have exact same size (ie: 2 2gb modules in each slot) or can differ (ie: 1 2gb module , 1 4gb module). understand apple recommends having same size both slots, wondering if hampered performance (or worse).

help!
