My experience/concerns with Lion

first of all, in no way intend insult think lion greatest iteration of apple's superb , rock-solid os'es. view , experience using it.

system mid-2009 13" mb pro, 2.26 ghz c2d, 4 gb ram. i've been using lion 10.7 10.7.3 (even before came out officially).

things lion:

1 - icloud. works, , imessages (beta) nice addition.

2 - full screen apps, in way it's nice have safari or reeder take whole screen, on 13" mb pro.

3 - finder. it's much, better. sorting features given.

4 - native scrolling. love after got used it. feels awkward using mouse. rest of gestures nice.

....that's it, really.

bad (the 'oh boy, start' section):

1 - terrible ram management. have never seen such bad os when comes this. windows vista better managing memory on old amd athlon 3200+ 1 gb ram.

prove it, on last 5 hours, ran windows xp vm light programs. on mac side: photoshop, firefox, adium, echofon, itunes, mail, etc...nothing heavy (and ps usage open 3 or 4 images , edit hue/saturation).

lo , behold, how system has been brutalized (i have closed ps , vm while taking screenshot):

pageouts unacceptable. os runs okay basic apps. if photoshop idle , win xp 512 mb ram vm opens bunch of apps, there goes fluidity.

1 thing: echofon. i'm avid twitter user, , love client. on snow leopard, latest version, never locked up. not 1 beachball. zero. nada. lion? okay, boot up, if you're lucky enough not beachball while it's loading timeline, you're blessed. if not, have wait 2+ minutes load. after 15 minutes, between switching apps , checking timeline, starts beachball , slows utter crawl. if it's app running around 2 gb free ram, still very, badly optimized lion. 1 app love have in background, , can't because if need use reason, locks randomly. terrible.

, don't tell me upgrade 8 gb, same system under snow leopard locked (and i'm talking twice month, more or less, 'cos never turn mac off unless have upgrade). now, beachballs constant. every single day, multiple times. refuse spend more money make system work decently again when latest beta (yes, beta) of windows 8 runs better on system apple os ever has.

, you're thinking - oh here have windows fan. no, use windows gaming. i'm merely stating same specs, 1 os runs lot better other.

2 - mission control. kills productivity. used have apps assigned spaces, neat. now, part still works, app exposé terrible. want exposé show in snow leopard. don't show me windows current app. clicking dock app icon! seriously?! apps don't create multiple windows (like firefox, in tabs).

have resort use dock change apps decently, , still requires find window want if, example, happens finder. ugh.

3 - launchpad. useless piece of crap ever made. use got straight off dock after fiddled around 10 minutes. know mountain lion has added search bar (hurray!).

basically, it's terrible. there no decent ordering, dumps apps in there that. if want ipad, ipad (and works there). if you're gonna port things over, @ least make them work correctly, apple.

alfred/quicksilver launchpad half effort , fraction of time spend looking correct app want open (and much, more).

4 - resume. kill.me.now. still cannot on nightmare had first time shut down mac, 15+ apps running, have them boot @ startup....and checkbox doesn't remember pick!

can't launch 15 apps @ same time unless have ssd (unless wish wait 10 minutes). computer lags on lion if try , open ff , itunes @ same time. it's such stupid feature.

, app resume pointless. mean, why resume preview, example? imagine if looking @ shouldn't have (just saying), , teacher/mom/whoever opened preview reason.....seriously.

worst happened me when wanted open 2 images compare side side after photoshop edit, , opened work .pdfs. had go , close them 1 one. how enjoyable.

5 - presentation support...i loved how snow leopard worked multiple monitors. now, if try , show full-screen app, other desktop gets grey backdrop. it's so, broken couldn't fathom how make work again.

6 - minor things clicking on trackpad wake mac...before worked simple tap. spotty wifi.

and 'save as' feature. don't me started on one...

final summary:

basically, lion let-down. me, @ least. feel i'm less productive time spent changing desktops, finding right app, not mention terrible memory management.

, don't tell me freememory pro or whatever. system should memory management without having purge manually. if you're using apps that, shows messed things in department.

1 reviewer once said few months ago: "os x beautiful girl, , every iteration new outfit. snow leopard sort of cheerleader outfit. now, it's shoved cheerleader pile of crap , called 'lion'."

'cheerleader in crap' analogy comes show how bad lion. i'm not going quit apple because messed elementary feature ram management. no, love apple , make great products. wait until fix mess of os (possibly mountain lion - tried out while ago , seemed lot more fluid) , upgrade.

now, i'm going sl can find installation disc. i'll miss icloud , imessages, long can mail work it. can still use iphone, that's not major issue.

hope reading can relate @ least 1 of problems above. feel pain.

rest never had problems lion, well, i'm happy you.

i feel on this. i'm not running lion on mac (i prefer 10.6.8 atm) lot of said resonates reasoning why chose not upgrade. there things "weren't broke" apple couldn't leave alone. never saw lion upgrade (it in ways) more os alternative... it's new norm, no more expose etc. since use desktop mouse, lot of makes lion fluid (multi touch gestures) eliminated makes lot more awkward use on trackpad. mountain lion should improve things little bit, isn't bringing snow leopard back. i'm glad got mac before lion shipped can hold onto sl... though know apple wants me upgrade!!
