MBP 2008 is no longer allowing me to select user profile at startup (trackpad issue?)

this crazy. i've been using 2008 mbp years without problem. last week, trackpad began acting funny in wouldn't allow me highlight text in order cut & paste etc. trackpad still worked fine in every other regard, started getting beach balls regularly, when didn't have many applications opened @ once (and when mail , safari running).

now, out of nowhere, trackpad isn't registering hard clicks @ startup , cannot past initial screen select user profile. trackpad still registering movements (i can move curser anywhere) can't click on user profile started. no idea why happening or can do. has got tips or ideas?

 

you don't need trackpad or mouse login.
press first initial of user want login , press enter, enter password , press enter again.
trackpad, 2008 or late 2008 model?
