Software Update Not Working

hi there, i've got little problem software update.

when open itunes, says:

'a new version of itunes (10.5.3) available. download now?'

do, click option 'download itunes' , software update pops in dock , dialogue box comes , says:

'the application “software update” forced quit while trying restore windows. want try restore windows again?'

click on option 'restore windows' , nothing happens. software update doesn't open up. went force quit window , says software update not responding. i'm not sure why it's doing this...

went apple site thinking might not date , decided download 'os x lion update 10.7.2 client combo' through site. went fine until 'installer' wouldn't open either (not responding) after i'd downloaded program. there's wrong being able update/install new things.

know problem might , actions should take see what's wrong?

p.s. laptop specs if needed are:
(macbook pro, 13-inch, mid 2009)
software: mac os x lion 10.7.2 (11c74)
processor: 2.53 ghz intel core 2 duo
memory: 4 gb 1067 mhz ddr3
graphics: nvidia geforce 9400m 256 mb

 

have tried repairing permissions using disc utility?

sounds somethings messed in machine.

looking mac though, looking @ specs.
