Macbook desktop files aren't visible.

my files on desktop not show, shows macintosh hd icon. thing is, when click on desktop file was, file reappears. can files, click on desktop file use , shows. when logout or shutdown laptop turn on, files gone again. visible in finder when go under desktop, they're not visible on desktop screen. don't know whats wrong. need help.
