hey guys,
lately i've been seeing mac beach ball many times. have 2011 13" mbp, base-level model, , installed lion when launched. happens when have few tabs open in chrome, ical full-screen on next space, utorrent downloading something, vlc paused halfway through tv show, itunes on, etc. there's sort of multitasking threshold somewhere. though laptop fast, it's annoying when cannot keep up, i'm thinking if should something.
1. maybe it's software thing. i've checked , repaired disk permissions , barely have apps launching during startup. restart or shutdown , close lid. according activity monitor, have 400-500mb of "free" ram. have 50+gb of free space in hdd.
2. maybe need upgrade ram. guys notice serious difference? don't run photoshop in regular basis, open lot of tabs while have else going on. looks cheap fix.
3. looked ssd+optibay upgrades, , think can cram osx , apps main (ssd) disk, while using older hdd multimedia files. how faster get? , mean, kind of fast. because it's 1 thing faster conversions, , have apps open instantly, snappy spotlight searches, , on.
guys think?
performance tips mac os x
some people repair, or recommend repairing permissions situations isn't appropriate. repairing permissions addresses specific issues. not "cure all" or general performance enhancer, , doesn't need done on regular basis. doesn't address permissions problems files or 3rd party apps.
five mac maintenance myths
there times when repairing permissions appropriate. so, here instructions:
if repairing permissions results in error messages, of these messages can ignored , should no cause concern.
usually, it's fine that. if you're having problems, however, restart can't hurt , may solve issues.
many ram cheap, as can, if it's not needed. however, ram prices continue fall, , if more isn't needed now, waiting buy @ later time when it's needed result in lower price.
determine if can benefit more ram, launch activity monitor , click system memory tab @ bottom check page outs. page outs cumulative since last restart, best way check restart computer , track page outs under normal workload (the apps, browser pages , documents have open). if page outs significant (say 1gb or more) under normal use, may benefit more ram.
mac os x: reading system memory usage in activity monitor
ssds improve performance relates reading/writing hard drive. help, isn't cure-all.
