question about osx, itunes, and iphone

i have ibook g4 1.42 ghz processor , 1 gb ddr sdram. read on apple's web site can run osx 10.5.8 on computer newer version of itunes can new iphone 4s.

but... customer service person @ both apple store , macmall both told me wouldn't work on current computer.

can afford new phone not new computer. current phone (iphone 3g, 3.5 years old) needing replacement (but still works). don't want replace computer yet because need do.

before jump in , go on ahead , buy newer, used computer, thought i'd seek wisdom of other consumers.

you can run mac os x 10.5 leopard on ibook, did. bot slower mac os x 10.4 tiger though, maybe add more ram it, if can (i had 1 ghz ibook 1.25 gb ram , leopard running okay on it, reverted mac os x 10.4 tiger on it).
know, mac os x 10.5 leopard retail dvds still go 100 usd via ebay. grey restore dvd not work.
