Is this a hard drive problem? Losing my sanity.

i have late 2009 mbp running out of hard drive space. month ago bought 750gb hitachi travelstar hard drive replace original one. worked great week. started hearing periodic clicking noise. called hitachi , said drive going bad, sent me one. installed new 1 , put failing drive in enclosure , tried use disk utility erase before sent back. that's when failed. no longer works.

2nd replacement fine few days, started hearing clicking sound again, put original drive in , put replacement in hard drive enclosure. booted drive had been clicking, isn't doing anymore. gives? times when hear noise when mbp , hot (had been running while) sitting idle such when i'm reading , not loading files/apps. think it's hard drive?

advice appreciated.

i took drive suspected of being defective out of mbp , put in hd enclosure. booted mac it. used couple of hours , never made sound, put in mbp. after hour of use sound came back. don't it. else making sound?
