How to create sustitle for an AVI video file?

hello there,

wondering how create own subtitles avi video. training purposes , need translation , add own subtitles. i've got final cut pro, don't know how use purpose.

which fcp version have? 6/7 or x?
versions before x came live type, allows titling "easily", fcp x comes own title tool, "t" above effects browser.
can take @ final cut pro via menu , search text.
