Resolved Time Machine Backup Going Very Slow, Freezes -

hi,

i've been using apple's time machine software wd "mypassport essential" external drive 2 years absolutely no problems. today plugged in first time in couple of months , when backup reached 4.63 of 23.62 gb, stopped progressing. clock in menu bar kept spinning if backing normally, after half hour still stuck @ 4.63gb (it took 15-20 minutes progress far). stopped backup , restarted it, time slow - after 20 minutes 360kb had been backed up.

after looking around on internet discovered how fix problem - stopping backup, deleting .inprogress file in "time machine backups/backups.backupdb/macbook"- third time ran, have same problem when backup reaches 4.63 gb.

sure not space issue drive still has 146.3 gb of remaining space. i've tried restarting computer, doesn't either. advice appreciated.

thanks,
nik

turn off spotlight indexing of drive backing to. if have finder window open on drive backing to, close it. might have corrupted tm backup. can start new 1 , new 1 might finish faster repair old one. keep in mind once faced corrupte tm backup, there significant risk have nothing. no backup whatsoever. it's better delete corrupted "sparsebundle" file , start afresh. time make sure spotlight switched off before backup begins.

never on wireless via slower 802.11n. i've had more 1 instance of corrupted tm backups on network , know better rely on tm backup on wifi. use gigabit ethernet if can. regular 100 mbps ethernet more reliable 802.11g waiting long time "fresh scratch" tm backup complete.
