hello all,
i'm proud owner of 2011 macbook pro 17" 2.4 i7. have 16g of 1333 ram installed, 2 (two) crucial m4 256 ssd's via data doubler. have wintec file mate 96g ssd express34 slot. have access lion , snow leopard, , external storage ever use. 1 external raid enclosure totaling 1tb (the patriot convoy xxl), 1 network 2tb drive, few 2.5" mechanical drives, couple 500's, 1 750, 120gb ssd, , standalone external 500gb drive (non network) have couple more laying around i've forgotten well.
please bear me here. i've done searching , experimenting can handle had gran mal seizure (second one, , bad) month ago , mind still not right might not make sense, i'll best. main reason telling because of searching pulled answers i'm having hard time comprehending them.
i'm not new computers, i've built lots , lots of them, liquid cooled ones too, , built liquid cooled machine no other i've ever seen. sold that, , took plunge mac world , got macbook. hardware i've got ok handle on. however, i've been windows guy. first mac. in windows though raid not consider myself fluent in. manage, don't understand inside , out.
here is. know excessive, fun. we're kind of designing dream machine here, not practical one. need use equipment have, "you don't need speed" answers aren't going helpful. i'm aware of start, i'm overkill kind of guy.
issues are:
first off, wintec drive bootable, there confusion read on line it's i'm running off of now. intended put bootcamp on , let windows have own little drive. absolutely need windows many programs used audio engineering/design. work in windows must have it.
i've read mixed stories lion , hardware raid 0, i'm 1 of ones cannot work. won't install on it's own, can't clone on, , time machine keeps hanging up...it's not happening. think liked snow leopard better anyway (i miss front row) may go anyway haven't tried hardware option under system yet. questions optimal way set considering need 50gb-ish windows. thought express card ssd w7, , raid 0 2 ssd's. hardware raid not working. simpler under snow leopard? or should soft raid i've been reading about?
raid 0 more volatile lot i'm not terribly worried. thinking single drive, fact it's raid...is going require me each individual drive it's own backup drive or partition? it's not problem if does, might problem in usig existing time machine backups. , if go soft raid route, there way build in sort of redundancy since have 3 ssd's? mechanical drives taking 2 drives , partitioning them 4 won't gain if understand correctly because have 1 writing instrument. ssd's case? cut 512 gb 4 120gb drives , use 96 well? don't have same read/write , overall performance can't lump express card 34 mix if way.
cleanliness of leaving windows on 34 card if have better reliability doing differently would. separate drive w7 kind of ocd thing me prefer safety net (all small one) clean break planned on. raid's i've done in past have been enclosures. i've messed around bios raid both marvell , jmicron , had less success why (on top of seizure brain cloud) i'm not quite sure way approach it.
optimal setup considering
1. need windows, 50gb do, little more wouldn't hurt 50 manageable.
2. don't need ton of room mac stuff. store music , audio test material in uncompressed lossless flac on network drive gets backed up. need space have full adobe suite (everything) few other programs, , 120gb of photos , test material audio need on hand. i'd keep room possible, speed main priority, if safety built in can afford hard drive space. if redundancy takes space can take care of regular ups. them everyday anyway
3. macbook has 6gb throughput on optical sata standard drive spot
4. best stripe size. little bit photos, not movies, it's audio , business files, thinking 32?
5. i'm not married lion can change if helps.
6. time machine backups though lion, , based of single disk, having raid setup, or perhaps moving snow leopard going cause problem folding old new? know can move files manually prefer not to.
know overkill, it's overkill project...thats goal. if had funds have gotten 2 512gb ssd's, leads me final question. because tinker thing much, wife wants use or browse net , i've got apart (either physically or software) going tablet. ipad worth better integration else our computer mac , network stuff formatted mac or of tablets in league job? need research little more after fix main problem food thought wouldn't hurt. got mess around ipad 2 today , pretty slick, it's first 1 i've ever handled.

sorry, forgot 1 thing. i've read conflicting info on softraid options, saying bootable, other's saying no. actual company softraid find said theirs not, there soft raid program people talking when it's bootable? again. - josh

think i,ve figured out problem optical bay not run sata 3. quest @ point is issue lion or people snow leopard not having problem? , know check see efi update numbers have?
