SuperDrive been broken -- firmware question?

i have 2008 (i think) 17" macbook pro, model identifier macbookpro5,1. on efi , smc firmware updates intel-based macs page (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237), there's no listing in table matches computer... there's 15" macbook pro corresponds macbookpro5,1. boot rom version , smc version both correspond provided alongside 15" macbookpro5,1.

mean @ all? , means there's no available firmware update superdrive... have friggen clue how can fix it? need work, obviously, won't read cds properly, it's real problem. in utilities folder there's superdrive update, when try running error message saying, "there problem installing update." has been case long can remember. (this macbook hand-me-down uncle, he's upgrading latest tech work.) i've had 2 or 3 years now. if happen know me out here, i'd appreciate input. lot.

a firmware update not fix broken piece of hardware. sounds superdrive broken.

also, if firmware matches 5,1 15" mbp, system firmware date.
