ipad 2 photos

i'm sure has been discussed on forums before, having difficulty getting photos onto ipad 2.

here current setup:

have airport extreme external hard drive connected it. photos stored in external hard drive, under iphoto library. there 14,000+ photos on hard drive.

on macbook air, can view these photos using wifi network run through airport extreme.

however, cannot find these photos ipad 2. have tried sync connecting macbook air , itunes. when that, on macbook air's itunes shows there photos on ipad 2... when click on photos on ipad... there nothing there except few photos taken on iphone.
